As the last enchanting, orange sunlight of yesterday vanished over the sheer vastness of The Great Ocean… I was sitting on my favourite cliff in Portugal. This weeks events with my business in Slovenia, was quite hard… hard to stay happy every second of my day. Sure, this consumed extra amounts of my energy, but I did it.
I learned the optimist way of looking at the “shit happens” situation. “This must be the best shit that ever happened”. And taking this point of view opened up all of my eyes, and I was able to clearly see and feel the universal purpose of this situation and the meaning for the path I have chosen to follow… with my heart, my mind and my soul united together.
I have wondered, since I first came to Portugal, what is the reason I always feel much better in this country, than in my country of birth Slovenia. Really, here in Portugal, some really breathtakingly amazing things have happened. Mostly concerning the pleasant Portuguese people…
The first contact with the Portuguese people I’ve had, wa son my first trip in May 2011. I was sitting next to one guy, who really had a body smell on the “TAP Portugal” air plane. It was annoying sitting next to his smell and soon he fell asleep and the situation, just got perfect. Was a loooooong flight to Lisbon…
As we were making a landing I asked that guy, if he can help me, by telling me the easiest way to get to the bus station “Siete Rios” (eng: Seven Rivers) on which I had to take the bus to Peniche, my final destination. And he said: “You need to go to Siete Rios? We have a car in the airport and we can drive you there by the way.” I was shocked. My first thought was… “what does this man want from me?” He was in his 60’s and had a wife with him, so I estimated I was in no inescapable danger and accepted his offer.
We had a really nice conversation with this Portuguese couple all the way trough the terminals. And when we arrived trough the “arrivals gate”, there was another shock. The whole of their family, like more than 20 people, were waiting for their arrival.
And when they told them about me… I met all of them. Kissed all the women on the chick (this is how you meet women in Portugal – love it, by the way). I felt like I was comming home. They’ve had 2 of their friends with them also and the car they’ve had on the airport was soon full of the luggage they’ve had with them. Nevertheless, they managed to get my big backpack in the car and drove me to the bus station. What a nice welcome to this amazing country of Portugal.
When they’ve dropped me at the Bus stop, I wanted to pay them, but there was no way for accepting. As I was walking to the bus, one guy asked me, if I have some change, that he needs for the Bus. I tought to my-slef: “This is my chance to “pay my luck.” I gave him 5 eur and asked him if he can maybe get something strong to smoke. He looked at me with some sadness in his eyes and said: “No”. Than after about a minute as he was walking next to me he said: ” I am really sorry, I was lying to you… I need this money to buy for smoke. If you want, I can give you back this money, I feel really bad now.” And I was shocked again. Such sincere and truthful honesty. Amazing country.
I’ve really made some good friendships, while surfing around this country. One of them is also Nico, the owner of the !G3 surf shop here in Peniche. After telling him, that I feel more at home here, that in Slovenia (my country of birth). And he said: “Really?! I’ve had one Dutch girl in the shop today, who said the same. I think it’s because of the people. We Portuguese are strange people. We always give and help in anyway we can. We believe in good karma… if you do something good, good things will happen to you. Sometimes, people tak advantage of our nature, but in the end it’s the best way.” WOW… this is something! I feel that my soul was actually born in Portugal, just the body in Slovenia.
Now I know why… my heart, my soul and my everything feels like home at Portugal.
“For a moment there, I lost my self… and found my true trough self”
Portugal; Honesto obrigado
